When professional rally organizer Rally-America of Minneapolis got the nod to stage a race for the first time at the 2006 X Games, it seemed to be confirmation that an abstruse form of racing appealing mainly to Europeans — albeit with jumps and spraying dirt — can, if packaged to just the right length and rock-music mix, draw in Americans, especially the male target audience of 18-to-24-year-olds. In this case, rallying’s relative obscurity in America also helped.

"Anything we add to the X Games can’t be too big or too established because it’ll overshadow everything else," says Chris Stiepock, general manager of ESPN Original Entertainment.
